You have the degree — BCA, BBA, BA, BCom, maybe an engineering gap year behind you — and now everyone from a YouTube ad to a cousin is telling you digital marketing is the shortcut. Some of them are right. The field genuinely does not care whether you cleared your backlogs, and it will interview you on work you can show. What nobody tells you is that the first year decides everything, and most people waste it collecting certificates.

Here is the roadmap we walk our students through, with the salary numbers said out loud instead of left vague.

The four roles you are actually applying for

"Digital marketing" is not a job title. Postings break down into four lanes, and picking a lane early makes your resume look focused instead of scattered.

  • SEO Analyst. Keyword research, technical fixes, content briefs, monthly reporting. The gentlest entry point because progress is measurable and mistakes rarely cost money.
  • Performance Marketer. Google Ads and Meta Ads with real budget on the line. Highest pressure, highest ceiling, and the role that pays a premium because you are trusted with somebody's money.
  • Social Media Manager. Calendar, creatives, community replies, reels. Do not underestimate this one — done properly it is content strategy plus customer service plus analytics.
  • Content Strategist. Deciding what gets written or filmed and why, then measuring whether it moved anything. Usually a second-year role after you have written enough yourself.

What the money looks like in India

Let us be concrete, because vague salary talk is how people end up in the wrong job for two years. A fresher with a real portfolio typically lands between ₹3 and ₹5 LPA in most Indian cities, and ₹5 to ₹6 LPA in Mumbai and Bangalore where agency burn is higher. After two to three years, with two or three campaigns you can defend in an interview, ₹8 to ₹12 LPA is normal for performance roles, while pure content and social roles often sit a little below unless you move into strategy.

Freelance income sits beside that. A part-time retainer of ₹10,000 a month on the side is not unusual in year two, and our freelancing guide covers how that starts. What does not exist is the "₹1 lakh from home in 30 days" version. Anyone selling that is selling you something else.

Your first 30 days, week by week

Whether you join a course or start self-learning, the first month should produce artifacts, not notes. This is the plan we give students on day one:

  • Week 1: learn the landscape — how search ranks, how ad auctions price, how the big dashboards are organised. Build a spreadsheet of ten local businesses you could hypothetically help.
  • Week 2: pick one of them and do the work for free on your own: Google Business Profile cleanup, three optimised service pages, an ad account structure on paper.
  • Week 3: get hands on a live budget. Even ₹500 of your own money on a search campaign teaches more than ten hours of theory about CPC.
  • Week 4: write it up. Problem, what you did, what the numbers did. That one page becomes the interview story you will repeat for a year.

Internship students compress this because the projects are handed to them: the 3+1 track gives you one month to apply the basics, the 5+2 lets you run a campaign through a full launch-and-fix cycle, and the 9+3 adds client handling and reporting. Our new batch starts 21 October 2026, and admission questions like installments and eligibility are answered there.

Classroom or self-learning — the honest version

YouTube can absolutely teach you how to set up a Meta ad. What it cannot do is tell you why your ad is bad. The gap between free learning and employable skill is feedback: someone experienced opening your account, saying "your audience is too broad and your offer is boring", and then making you fix it under a deadline.

Self-learning works if you are the rare person who keeps a schedule, builds a portfolio anyway and gets real feedback from somewhere — a mentor, a freelance client, a job with a good manager. If you are not that person, structure is what you are paying for, along with tool access, peer pressure and a placement desk. If the structured route suits you, compare the three programs, check the full fee breakdown, and read the AI-tools piece on the tools you should already be comfortable with.

The first 90 days on the job

You will be given the unglamorous work first: bulk keyword exports, image resizing, report formatting. Treat it as reconnaissance. The people who learn the account while doing the boring part get handed campaigns within two quarters; the ones who complain about it stay "junior" for four years. Track your wins from day one — conversion counts, cost per lead reduced, a page that moved from position nine to four — because two years later those numbers are your entire negotiation. Our graduates' outcomes are published with names and companies so you can see what the trajectory looks like in practice.

The degree got you shortlisted for nothing. Ninety days of documented work gets you the interview. That is the whole roadmap, and it is well within your reach.
